What do I wear to class?

Many people like to wear close fitting clothing. This is fine but sometimes too tight clothing can be restricting. Especially since you want to be able to breathe easily you will need clothing that is comfortable. Loose and comfortable is usually what I suggest, and layers.

What do I bring to a class?

Always bring water. If you have any injuries you may want to bring a towel you can roll up to support your spine in certain positions, or even a cushion. Some people bring a light blanket if the environment is cool. If you have your own yoga mat, bring that too.

What about physical condition?

You can begin practising yoga at any stage of life and with any level of fitness. There are many variations to postures that can support injuries or other body conditions. Always let your teacher know injuries and medical conditions so that you can be given alternatives to standard postures.

Why do I sometimes feel dizzy after a posture? Or nauseated?

It's important to understand that asanas and kriyas can be very powerful. They not only affect the physical body but work on the emotional and psychological "bodies" as well as stimulate toxin release.  Here are some guidelines to follow and some ideas to help you get the most out of your yoga class.

1. Always be well hydrated. Drink pure water before class and drink during the class, when needed. If you feel dizzy you may be mildly dehydrated. Release of toxins can also cause dizziness or nausea. Always drink plenty of pure water after the class to facilitate release of toxins.

2. If you have hypertension or other heart conditions where your heart should NOT be above the head, let your teacher know. He/she can give you variations so you can get the most out of the class and avoid complications in conditions. Always let the teacher know any physical conditions, injuries or illnesses you have.

3. Try not to eat up to 3 hours before class. Undigested foods can cause nausea especially when you are doing a class that focuses on the digestive system.

4. Try not to drink stimulants like coffee or strong tea before class. Wait until after. Your body will thank you.
